Charlemagne ruled from Aachen, Germany. He had great influence on culture and education in addition to bringing Roman ideas about government to a large portion of Europe.

Many of these beautiful cathedrals were damaged in the Thirty Years religious wars, WWI, or WWII. The reconstruction projects were huge.
